Five-Spice Powder

Five-Spice Powder

You can find five-spice powder in the stores now with relative ease. However, for those times you want to go the extra mile and cook something special that deserves the most flavor possible, you can make your own mix; it elevates the dish.

I also like to make my own mix because the blend is tailored to my own taste. I like less cloves and more cinnamon. You can play with the ratios until you hit your sweet spot.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons fennel seeds
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 teaspoon Sichuan peppers

Directions

  1. In a small pan, heat all the spices for a few minutes. You want to lightly toast them so they release all their aroma. Keep moving them around the pan so they don’t burn.
  2. Remove from pan, let cool.
  3. Grind them in a spice grinder until you have a fine powder.
